Marty Mauser fights for his sport – he is a passionate table tennis player, alongside his actual and not particularly appreciated job as a shoe salesman in his uncle's store. Once highly regarded in Asia, table tennis is barely recognized by the general public and the crucial sponsors in his home country, the USA. Marty is determined to change that, and although his talent seems to validate him, he cannot finance his travels to tournaments without small tricks and deceit. His arrogant and reckless demeanor causes him to clash with others, and his unwavering will to win increasingly blinds him to his surroundings.
In a rapid narrative pace and with biting humor, director Josh Safdie paints an authentic backdrop of New York in the post-war 1950s alongside the main character.
