In his last film, the director Wolfgang Becker, who passed away in 2024, tells the story of Micha, a video store owner who involuntarily becomes the title hero of an East German escape story. When journalist Alexander Lehmann appears in his shop and confronts him with the fact that Micha facilitated the escape of over 100 East German S-Bahn passengers to the West in 1983, the unassuming klutz quickly becomes a celebrated talk show guest. By confirming a planned escape that was actually just a coincidence, Micha enjoys various forms of recognition and amenities, but soon realizes the ghosts he has summoned. With a satirical wink, the film questions the formation of heroism and legends and puts German-German sensitivities to the test.
