Safety information

Safe hiking on the Rheinsteig

Walkers enjoy narrow paths, natural trails and rocky climbs that lead to spectacular views.

It goes without saying that particular care must be taken on these types of paths.

Points to bear in mind on your walk

  • Dress in suitable clothing appropriate for the weather conditions that will protect you from cold and wet or from heat and the sun.
  • Plan your stages with suitable rest stops and conserve your energy.
  • Take enough to drink with you. Refreshments are not available everywhere along the route.
  • Please wear suitable footwear for walking that provides adequate grip, even on slippery and steep or rocky and uneven paths.
  • If you think you cannot tackle a certain section of the route, avoid it or use an alternative route. Particularly in unfavourable weather conditions, natural paths can become muddy and slippery.
  • In the autumn, fallen leaves can also obscure uneven surfaces, roots, stones or holes in the path.
  • You should anticipate adverse conditions of this nature when you undertake a hiking trip.
  • Particularly steep and hazardous sections of the route have been made safe with barriers or ropes. Please treat these safety aids with due respect. Barriers are intended to prevent falls and should not be used as climbing frames or viewing platforms.
