Hollywood 1939, behind the scenes of the greatest film of all time, Gone with the Wind. Filming has barely begun when producer David O. Selznick has it stopped - he realised almost too late that the film would take well over seven hours with the previous script. A new script was needed. Selznick brought in the experienced Ben Hecht to condense the saga. The only problem is that Hecht has never read the novel. With time running out, Selznick resorts to an emergency solution: together with director Victor Fleming, he plays out the complicated plot for Hecht. At the same time, Hecht writes the dialogue. The three men are locked up in Selznick's office for almost a week, slipping into changing roles, spiralling into the frenzy of melodrama, living through the burning of Atlanta, the dramatic birth of Melanie's baby, Scarlett's intrigues and amours, struggling with their own exhaustion, growing irritation and very different perspectives on the material.
