Ein seltenes Zeugnis der letzten Kriegsmonate
Johannesstr. 20, 56112 Lahnstein
It is a find that brings history to life: While sorting through her grandfather's estate, Brigitte Stange came across the "Wackershofen Diary" of the writer and Koblenz high school teacher Dr. Anton Gabele.
At the beginning of 1945, Gabele fled from the bomb-threatened Koblenz to relatives on a farm in Wackershofen near Meßkirch. There he experienced the last months of the war and the beginning of the occupation period. His diary entries describe thoughts, observations, and moods of that time.
Gabele despises the National Socialist regime, but he does not perceive the advancing Allies as liberators either. This ambivalent stance makes the diary a rare and authentic document of the prevailing sentiment among many Germans at the time.
Anton Gabele was born in 1890 in Buffenhofen and worked as a senior teacher in Koblenz since 1919. His well-known works include "Der arme Mann," "Talismann," "Haus zur Sonne," and "Der Wundermann vom Bodensee." In 1960, he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit.
The reading is a cooperative event between the Lahnstein City Library and the Lahnstein Theatre and will take place on Saturday, May 9th at 7:30 PM at the theater.
Tickets are available online via Ticket Regional, at the Lahnstein Tourist Information at Salhofplatz, and at all advance sales outlets of Ticket Regional.
