Salkellerei

Hochstraße, 56112 Lahnstein

Salkellerei, winery of the former Oberlahnstein winegrowers' association.

The building of the former electoral wine cellar is located on Hochstraße, opposite Salhofplatz. The wine cellar is one of the oldest buildings in the city. The oldest parts date back to the 14th century, possibly even the 13th century. Until 1845, the tithe was stored in the wine cellar, including wine and grain. These formed the so-called natural tax, which was required by the ruler. Parts of the outer walls of the cellar building have been preserved, as well as the impressive wine cellar measuring 8 x 8 meters with a height of 4.50 meters. The wine cellar has a central column that supports the cross vault. Next to it is another cellar room of the same size. The Oberlahnsteiner winegrowers' association used the cellars until 1972. The wine barrels were stacked in two rows on top of each other. Most of the barrels were casks with a volume of up to 4200 liters. Up to 43,000 liters of wine could be stored in the wine cellar. Pressing was done in a large double press and another press, which is now located at the Pulverturm in Hintermauergasse. Due to the immense depth of the wine cellar, the cellar stairs still lead down outside the main building today. The impressive wine cellar is not yet accessible to visitors.
