Pfingstreiterbrunnen
Peter-Siemeister-Str., 56564 Neuwied
A monument was erected in 1983 at the square of the "Nohberschbank" in honor of the Pentecost riders and their more than 450-year history.
The fountain was made by the artist and sculptor Georg Ahrens from Trimbs in the Eifel. It consists of a multi-part basalt column on which 2 figures of Pentecost riders made of bronze casting can be seen. 4 spouting sheep heads symbolize the agreement between the shepherds and the farmers. Thus, the drive of the sheep over the Heddesdorf and Niederbieber meadows to the Rhine and the Wied was granted in exchange for payment to the riders and field workers upon arrival at the Rommersdorf monastery and the boys on the Langendorf monastery courtyard. This right ceased to exist when Neuwied grew larger and the estate disappeared. A similar agreement exists with the Reuler court in Engers. This agreement remains in effect to this day.
