The German Hiking Seal of Approval

Planning in accordance with the criteria for modern certified hiking trails.

The RheinSteig has been planned in accordance with modern certified hiking trails. It boasts good marking and signage and offers an attractive route mainly on natural paths and climbs. Where possible, asphalt has been avoided; the paths run predominantly through forests and rocky areas, meadows and vineyards.

The German Hiking Institute has developed criteria by which hiking trails can be designed to a high level of quality to meet the wishes of walkers.

Certification as a premium trail

Evaluation of the RheinSteig on the basis of these criteria commenced in Autumn 2005. As of 7 August 2006, it was recognised that it had achieved the required standard and the German Hiking Seal of Approval was officially awarded at the celebration of its first anniversary on 8 September 2006.

The route was successfully recertified in 2009, 2012 and 2015. The RheinSteig may thus continue to bear the designation "Certified Hiking Trail" which remains valid for three years.
