Form and Space in Dialogue

About the sculptures of Werner Bitzigeio

The artist Werner Bitzigeio uses industrially manufactured iron wire as a means of artistic expression, which he understands not as a functional building material, but as an independent material with high design potential. His wire works do not describe space through mass, but make it visible through circumvention – they create what is known as "negative space".

His works consist of carefully wrapped wire structures, which are mostly built around a prefabricated core with irregular geometry. Despite the heavy material, the objects appear light, dynamic, and open. They often develop an organic visual language and embody "constantly changing movement that playfully circumvents space".
Bitzigeio's works are situated in an art historical context with wire art pioneers like Alexander Calder and Pablo Picasso. Like them, he expands the concept of sculpture to include the aspect of space occupation. His works are characterized by transparency, lightness, and spatial openness, challenging traditional notions of weight, statics, and materiality.

A central theme is the relationship between body and space. In so-called "wire cubes" or "Zen space constructions," Bitzigeio addresses the overcoming of heaviness and creates transparent structures that evoke an atmosphere of silence and meditative immersion.

The organic forms, the play with density and openness, as well as the sensitive transformation of the wire material lead to an artistic statement about the rhythm of coming into being and passing away. Thus, the works possess a strong, profoundly human dimension that poetically intertwines space, time, and material.
