The Prussian building official C.L. Althans designed the unique Sayner casting hall. Huge, cast-iron columns not only support the roof but also form the basis for a hall crane and several iron swivel cranes. All of this was "new" around 1830. However, his inventive work extended far beyond that: from mobile copying desks to iron blast furnaces to electric drives. After an overview of Althans’ work as an inventor, the lecture poses the question of whether Althans was ahead of his time based on the preserved ball-bearing swivel cranes.
