“Shaped by Fire and Stone – The Westerwald in Photography and Ceramics”
Photographs by Andreas Pacek and ceramics by Martin Goerg and Andreas Hinder showcase the landscape and art of the Westerwald Neuwied - District Administrator Achim Hallerbach and Museum Director Jennifer Stein will inaugurate the new special exhibition “Shaped by Fire and Stone – The Westerwald in Photography and Ceramics” at the Roentgen Museum Neuwied on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at 3 PM. The exhibition is dedicated to the Westerwald as a space of nature and culture, the character of which is significantly shaped by its volcanic origin. Basalt, phonolite, and slate formations, dense forests, wide ridges, and industrial relics create a landscape of archaic strength - at the same time, the region has been a center of ceramic tradition for centuries. Neuwied photographer Andreas Pacek approaches this landscape with a sensitive awareness of light, structure, and atmosphere. His photographs capture the Westerwald in tranquil expanses: powerful, earthy, and simultaneously poetic. The ceramic works of Martin Goerg and Andreas Hinder from Höhr-Grenzhausen enter into a compelling dialogue with the photographs. Both artists stand in the tradition of Westerwald stoneware and develop distinct contemporary positions from it.
Martin Goerg works with Westerwald stoneware clay and draws on a centuries-old technique in his interpretation of traditional salt firing. This results in vessels and sculptures that appear archaic, with vibrant, shifting surfaces and an earthy character, whose reduced language of form unfolds an impressive spatial presence.
Andreas Hinder creates his ceramic animal sculptures in free construction. Motifs such as hare, fox, or raven refer both to native animal species and to archetypal figures with mythological symbolism. His works combine a clear, contemporary form with narrative depth and address the relationship between nature, myth, and human imagination.
The opening of the exhibition will be accompanied by an audiovisual multi-vision show about the Westerwald by Andreas Pacek. The epic soundscapes of Hans Zimmer and other composers will be interpreted by Frank Pacek.
As part of the vernissage, the award ceremony for the accompanying photography competition will also take place.
