Tattooing and body modification in prehistoric and early history

Long before tattoos became a fashion statement and piercings found their way into everyday life, people consciously shaped their bodies. They used it to express belonging, identity, or social rank and to orient themselves towards prevailing beauty ideals. Archaeological discoveries provide us with numerous insights into the deeply rooted beliefs and worldviews of earlier societies. In his lecture, archaeologist Lukas Kerk dedicates himself to the earliest evidence of human body modification, its interpretation, and the question of why these forms of expression continue to exert such a great fascination to this day.
