Under the Skin - Tattoos from the Ice Graves of Altai

The tattooed mummies from the icy graves of the Altai Mountains are among the most impressive archaeological discoveries ever and have significantly shaped our image of the Iron Age Pazyryk culture. Thanks to the use of modern, high-resolution imaging techniques combined with experimental research, it is now possible not only to interpret the depicted motifs better but also to gain profound insights into the tattooing techniques and methods of that time.
Dr. Gino Caspari takes us back to this early phase of tattoo art and demonstrates how the latest technological methods gradually reveal hidden details of this millennia-old practice.
