Sensitive reading about origin and identity

After the sudden death of her mother, twenty-year-old Mila learns a disturbing truth: her whole life is based on a lie revealed to her by her father in anger.

Shaken and in search of answers, Mila leaves her home in the north and travels to a remote mountain village in the south. She is looking for a specific farm run by a woman alone. When the milkmaid opens the door, Mila offers her money to stay for a while – in search of peace, days without distractions, "other days," as she puts it. Almut, who lives a reclusive life on the farm, hesitates. She does not yet suspect that this encounter is no coincidence. Ultimately, she takes in the stranger, and during a sweltering summer, the two women learn to trust each other.

Surrounded by an imposing mountain landscape that is both majestic and challenging, Mila becomes aware of how much nature shapes life on the farm and in the village. Almut, in turn, is impressed by how quickly Mila adapts to the unfamiliar world. But as the women discover painful connections, old wounds are reopened, yet new possibilities also arise. By the end of this summer, both must decide what they can truly let go of and what will remain a part of their lives forever.

The Lost Bond is a finely woven and emotional novel about the power of life-changing connections and the overcoming of deep fractures.

Frank Bresching has created a moving novel about identity, loss, and hope.
