After ten years of absence, he returns – only to find that his life has become something entirely different: His girlfriend has married another man, and the village community has divided his possessions among themselves. However, when he tries to start a new life under the name Johannes Schwarz, he quickly realizes that this is not as simple as it seems. The real Johannes Schwarz led a shady life, and Samuel Kiefer is guided by the bureaucratic shortcomings of the post-war period onto a difficult path that brings him to a sobering realization: "Human life and the authorities – they have absolutely nothing to do with each other."

The story is narrated in front of the patients of a mental asylum by Samuel Kiefer himself and his doctor Dr. Neuross, whose past is also filled with secrets. The production powerfully illuminates the life of a person who stands outside society but desperately tries to integrate into it – a theme that is just as relevant today as ever.
