View of the "old" town tower and Stolzenfels
After Turner crossed over to Lahnstein from the left bank of the Rhine, he sketched Castle Stolzenfels again, this time looking upstream. The foreground shows a tranquil scene that gives insight into life by the river. Everyday situations like this, alongside natural landscapes, held a particular allure for Turner. The middle ground is dominated by the Martinsburg, built around 1300, with its powerful hexagonal tower featuring an elaborate pointed arch frieze. Stolzenfels Castle is visible in the background, as is the parish church of St. Martin. This is one of the few architecturally rich images that captures many details and served as a finished template for engravers. The Martinsburg is currently privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside. Stolzenfels Castle is now owned by the state of Rhineland-Palatinate and can be visited.
