Weingüter Wegeler
Friedensplatz 9-11, 65375 Oestrich-Winkel
The Wegeler wineries are a family-run company founded in 1882. The business is currently operated by the fourth generation of the Wegeler family together with Ralf Frenzel as the spokesperson for the owner families, under the management of CEO Richard Grosche.
The Wegeler wineries consist of three winery branches on the Rhine and Mosel rivers, founded out of a shared passion for Riesling. A small but fine portion of Pinot Noir has complemented our company since the purchase of the Krone Assmannshausen winery.
Julius Wegeler was initially a wine merchant and sparkling wine producer at Deinhard before establishing himself as a winemaker. The decision to produce wine must therefore be viewed from the perspective of a merchant and trader, based on the trading customs of the time: The quality of a wine was inextricably linked to its ripeness along with its origin. Young wine, in today’s sense, usually rested on the lees for at least two winters, while outstanding vintages were often held back much longer. Against this backdrop, Wegeler needed not only capital but also foresight, climate-controlled storage, and the most precious asset of all: time.
With the establishment of the winery management, Wegeler laid the foundations for today’s operation based in Oestrich-Winkel. With a keen eye on the future, he purchased the finest locations in the Rheingau and Mosel regions to become independent as a wine merchant and sparkling wine producer from his suppliers. By selecting these top-quality sites, Julius Wegeler created the foundation of our current operation: a winery with an unparalleled portfolio of predominantly Grand and Premier Cru sites. The Wegeler wineries thus have unique conditions for producing long-lasting world-class wines - both then and now.
