Coming from Koblenz, Turner walked upstream on the left bank of the Rhine on August 23, 1817. Shortly before Stolzenfels Castle, he made a sketch for this watercolor. The painting depicts the mouth in front of him (center of the image), framed by rocky backdrops on both sides of the river. To the right in the picture, Stolzenfels Castle rises darkly against the slope. It is striking that Turner places the mouth of the Lahn on the wrong side of the Rhine. Whether this is due to compositional reasons or whether Turner made an error remains unclear. A few hundred meters further, Turner crosses over to Lahnstein by ferry. Stolzenfels Castle is now owned by the state of Rhineland-Palatinate and can be visited.
