The Powder Tower is located on a rocky spur in an important place for the defense of the city. Here the city wall on the Michelfeld changed its direction and descends into the valley of the Oberbach. Only the powder tower was raised as a semicircular shell tower at the same time as the wall was built. By dendrochronological research it was possible to establish that the time of its construction falls in the years 1241/42. At first, the tower, like the whole wall on Michelfeld, was lower than it is today. When the city wall was raised, two new floors were added to the powder tower. For better protection of the powder, the lowest floor was given a barrel vault. The top floor was provided with a battlement and a wooden walkway. If you look closely, you can still see the bricked-up battlements of the older, lower tower in the rising masonry.
