Prinz Maximilian zu Wied Denkmal
Theaterplatz, 56564 Neuwied
In front of the Castle Theater stands the monument for the naturalist and ethnologist Prince Maximilian of Wied (1782-1867), the painter Karl Bodmer, and an Indian chief. "Prince Max" traveled with Bodmer through large parts of the "New World" and collected important insights as one of the greatest naturalists during his journey to North America (1832-1834) about Indian tribes. His research reports are still regarded as a scientific standard work. His travel reports provided background information about the "Wild West," which was utilized by Karl May for his "Winnetou" novels.
The monument also features the Swiss artist and engraver Karl Bodmer as an accompanying figure and the Indian chief Mato Tope.
