On the harbor dam at the Rüdesheim winter harbor stand two historic mulberry tree alleys, which have been protected as natural monuments since 1934. The approximately 150-year-old stocks are a reminder of the former use of the trees for silkworm breeding, food, and dyeing.
Mulberry trees were often planted as avenues in harbor facilities in the past. This is also the case in Rüdesheim, where for 150 years two avenues of the tree species originally native to warmer regions of Asia have stood on the artificially constructed harbor dam. They were designated as a natural monument as early as 1934. Since 1987, members of the Rüdesheim yacht club have been taking care of the preservation of the avenue and replanting trees. The leaves of the trees served for centuries in the breeding of silkworms. Their fruits, which resemble elongated blackberries, taste delightful as jam and juice; in the past, they were also used to dye red wine.
