MONREPOS Archäolog. Forschungszentrum u. Museum für menschl. Verhaltensevolution

Schloss Monrepos, 56567 Neuwied

Once a princess castle, now an archaeological research center and museum

Monrepos (French: "My Peace") is a historic local recreation area above the Middle Rhine Valley. The former princely summer residence on the heights above the town of Neuwied is situated amidst extensive forests at the edge of the Westerwald. Here, long-distance hiking trails such as the Rheinsteig, the Limeswanderweg, and the Rheinhöhenweg intersect. Schloss Monrepos is the centerpiece of the historical ensemble of buildings of the Princes of Wied from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The new restaurant, the museum shop, and of course the romantic hiking trails offer a complete package for an unparalleled experience. The exhibition is located on the ground floor of the castle and is barrier-free.

The exciting permanent exhibition
“UNDERSTANDING HUMANITY” at Schloss Monrepos, the so-called “Castle of Researchers.”

Recognized archaeologists from all over the world research and work at Schloss Monrepos! This fact alone is extraordinary. And thus, it is no coincidence that the museum made possible through research - located directly in the castle - presents a permanent exhibition that is unmatched worldwide. The exploration of archaeological finds from 2.5 million years of human evolution, combined with the findings of human behavioral development, is unique in itself. However, creating a lively and exciting transfer of this knowledge to our present behavior in an exhibition concept “UNDERSTANDING HUMANITY” can only be offered there. Why am I the way I am? With the innovative and interactive exhibition concept and the unusually entertaining guided tours, a lasting experience for the whole family is guaranteed.

Guided tours by prior arrangement also on other days.
