Fort Konstantin

PRO KONSTANTIN e. V., Am Fort Konstantin 30, 56075 Koblenz

The fort, built between 1822 and 1827, was named after the brother of the Russian Tsar Alexander I, Konstantin Pavlovich.

The largely preserved fort stands on the site of a medieval monastery, initially of the Benedictines, later of the Carthusians, who gave the district its name. The purpose of the fortification was to secure the urban area and to serve as an observation point for the much larger, now disappeared fortress of Kaiser Alexander. With the advent of new weapons systems, the fort was also modified and reinforced several times. In 1920-21, the fort faced complete demolition due to city preservation requests, but it had to be rendered unusable for military purposes. To accommodate an air raid control center, the right casemate wing was reinforced during World War II. Today, it houses the exhibition "Koblenz in World War II." Since the 1990s, a comprehensive renovation of all fortress parts took place, so that the terraced facility is now successfully used as a venue for concerts, theater, and festivals.
