Church St. Barbara

Pfarrgasse 6, 56112 Lahnstein

St. Barbara Church in Niederlahnstein, built in 1385!

Since 1358, there has been a Barabara chapel in Niederlahnstein. It stood like the second Barabara chapel from 1712 and the neo-Gothic Barabara church built in 1889 and demolished again in 1938 on the church square near the Lahn bridge. On Barabara Day 1937, the first spade was turned for the present Barabara church, while at the same time the old church was being demolished, from which much material was used for the new church building. The foundation stone of the Barabara church was laid on January 23, 1938, and on December 18, it was consecrated by Bishop Antonius Hilfreich. After two bombing hits in December 1944 and January 1945, the church was largely destroyed. The reconstruction took years amid great difficulties. On the fourth Sunday of Lent in 1948, a service could be celebrated for the first time in the restored crypt. However, the final reconstruction did not take place until 1949/50. Further modifications occurred in the 1950s and 1960s. At the apex of the choir's semicircle stands the sacrament house against the backdrop of a group of four reddish-brown marble pillars that are interconnected by a bronze relief band. The altar and the ambo, as the place of proclamation, were brought forward during the last design of the choir area, thus establishing a closer connection to the faithful as the center of divine events. The facade of the church is enhanced by the double portal, which is covered with bronze, featuring reliefs depicting themes from salvation history.
