Sagenburg "The Hostile Brothers"
Hotel Burg Liebenstein is the highest castle on the Middle Rhine.
The castle Liebenstein, built in the 13th century, along with the nearby castle Sterrenberg, is known as "The Hostile Brothers".
The two castles have been irreconcilably feuding since 1320, after Sterrenberg completely fell to the Archbishopric of Trier, leading the Lords of Liebenstein to withdraw entirely to Castle Liebenstein. The construction of a massive shield wall on Sterrenberg architecturally documents how deep the ideological divide was between the two groups. Additionally, Castle Liebenstein served as a shared castle for co-heirs as early as 1340: co-heirs were noble families that lived together in a castle complex due to inheritance divisions. Liebenstein united around ten families from various small castles who lived in different buildings.
The structures of the co-heirs can still be recognized today at Castle Liebenstein, where a hotel with a restaurant was established after extensive renovations starting in 1977.
The small family-run hotel at Castle Liebenstein now offers a medieval ambiance in a castle hotel with great attention to detail.
