Signposts

How far is it to the next town and where can I find a ferry or rail connection? You can find this information on any of around 1000 signposts mounted at approx. 500 different locations. Important features are signposts for near-by and distant destinations, indicating distances in km and displaying pictograms. The signposts have almost exclusively been produced from natural products and blend in beautifully with the cultural and natural landscape of the Central Rhine valley.

Signpost colouring

The signposts with a blue triangle show distances on the Rheinsteig trail. The signposts with an ochre-coloured triangle indicate access paths, which lead either from the railway stations and town centres to the Rheinsteig trail or vice versa.

Important: The Rheinsteig trail often does not offer the shortest route between places or points of interest, but rather the most attractive. Therefore we recommend using a topographical route map, in which the other walking routes are shown. This way it is easier to plan round trips and short cuts.

Location markers

You will find a location marker on every signpost, providing information on elevation, position and also the UTM coordinates.  These coordinates enable orientation with the assistance of GPS-systems (Global Positioning System) according to the Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system. Furthermore, the tourist information telephone number for Rheinsteig hikers (+49 (0)1805-648 328, 14 Cent/Min.) is stated on the location marker. At the moment, the caller will be connected to the Rhineland-Palatinate Tourism Ltd company’s central tourist office. We are currently working on extending our services to cover weekends and public holidays, meaning that even on these days it will be possible for the tourist to acquire competent information.

This number may also be used to report trail or signpost defects.

Pictograms

The Rheinsteig signposts depict little symbols providing specific tourist information. These pictograms are listed below. They provide better orientation and information about railway stations, boat connections, accommodation and places of interest. This will be especially helpful for our foreign guests.
