It is remarkably easy to walk along the Rheinsteig trail. The closely meshed network of signposts established according to the signpost regulations stipulated by the German Hikers Association and the German Hikers Institute is very convenient.
Signposts at all junctions are mounted in such a way that you always remain on the correct path. If the path takes a different turn, you will always find a plaque depicting an arrow showing the turn-off, just before or directly at the junction. Directly beyond this you will find route confirmation signposts. Furthermore there are safety signposts in close succession. These signposts are painted or sprayed signs, plastic plaques on marking posts or stickers.
A white R on a blue background stands for R=Rhein and also for the winding course of the river, visible from every viewing point.
Here you will find the same sign on a yellow background. These paths connect the Rheinsteig trail with town centres and railway stations. Thus the hiker can easily catch a train or get to his accommodation at the end of his tour, and the hiker who has just arrived has quick access to the Rheinsteig trail.
Along the Rhine there are a variety of different routes whose markings are not always in the best condition. When walking along the Rheinsteig trail, you will also come across the Rheinhöhenweg (higher Rhine trail), the Limes trail, the Rhine-Burgen trail (castle trail), the Gebück trail, the Rhine-Panorama trail, the Rheingau-Riesling trail or local nature trails. If you are planning on going on a round trip, please use the route maps for orientation.
